Bit Reactor, the studio behind the highly anticipated strategy game Star Wars: Zero Company, has confirmed that permadeath will be a foundational feature. Drawing inspiration from tactical RPGs such as XCOM, the game aims to deliver a high-stakes experience where the loss of squad members is irreversible, a design choice the developers assert is central to the game's narrative and thematic identity. In Star Wars: Zero Company, players will assume command of a diverse squad of alien operators. Unlike many titles where character death might be temporary or easily mitigated, any squadmate defeated in combat will be permanently removed from the player's roster. This decision forces players to carefully consider their tactical engagements and the long-term consequences of their actions.
The implementation of permadeath was not without internal discussion, according to Narrative Lead Aaron Contreras. Speaking with PC Gamer, Contreras revealed that there "were some fights" during development at Bit Reactor regarding "how much do we want to limit the impact that a character like [Umbaran sniper] Luco Bronc can have in the story when they can catch a blaster bolt in the face really early on and then they're gone forever." Despite his initial reservations, Contreras ultimately embraced the design choice, stating it was "absolutely the right decision." He elaborated that the system "made it easier to support parity between our authored operators and our custom operators – the ones that the player creates out of whole cloth – because even those operators have their own personalities and backgrounds and specializations." To mitigate the immediate loss of key story characters, Bit Reactor has developed a nuanced approach. While certain "hand-crafted" characters, like Luco, may be protected by narrative events from an early, unceremonious death, their vulnerability increases significantly once they are fully integrated into the player's team. At that point, their survival becomes entirely dependent on player skill and tactical acumen. Bit Reactor co-founder Greg Foertsch underscored the thematic relevance of permadeath within the Star Wars universe itself.
"Star Wars is about loss," Foertsch stated, referencing iconic moments such as Obi-Wan Kenobi's death. This emphasis on sacrifice and consequence aims to immerse players more deeply into the dramatic stakes inherent in the galactic conflict. This commitment to permanent consequences signals Bit Reactor's intent to deliver a *Star Wars* strategy experience that pushes players beyond traditional gameplay expectations, compelling them to confront the profound implications of sacrifice and survival and to truly see "what's on the other side of the experience."
